Summary Of Movie

1. About a regular construction worker called Emmet, an ordinary lego figurine who always follows the rules, he was mistakenly identified as "The Special", (which is an extraordinary being and the person who has to save the world. He finds himself dragged into a group of strangers who are on a mission to stop an evil leader that plans to conquer the world. Unfortunately for Emmet, he is hopelessly unprepared for such a task, but he'll give it his all nonetheless.

2. The themes for this movie is Lego, be creative.

1. Challenges genre conventions: might be a mixture of many genres; challenge typical character roles etc.

2. Pastiche:imitates other texts, humerous take on society/culture

3. Hyper-reality: makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie.

The Lego Movie:

Narrative Theory

A film's narrative is the story of a film and is broken down into 5 key stages by theorist Tzvetan Todorov:

1. Equilibrium: This is what the world/setting of the place is like at the begining of the story, it could be good, or bad, but it's normal.

2. Disruption: Something bad happens (usually caused by the film's main antagonist)

3. Recognition of disruption: The protagonist/s realise that something is wrong.

4. Attempt to solve disruption: This takes up most of the film, its when the Protagonist/s make their best efforts to solve the problem.

5. New equilibrium: At the end of the story the world is back to normal 90% of the time, it will not necessarily be back the way it was, but usually better than it was, unless of course there's a massive cliff hanger at the end.

The Lego Movie Summary:

Equilibrium: Emmet going to work having a normal day singing and buying expensive coffee.
Disruption: Emmet falls through massive hole and ends up in an interrogation room.
Recognition Of Disruption: President Business reveals evil plan to Emmet.
Attempt To Solve Disruption: Emmet and a team of master builders go to President Businesses tower and stop him.
New Equilibrium: Emmet changes President Businesses mind and people are allowed to build whatever they want.

Propp's Spheres Of Action

The Hero: Generally leads the narrative; has a quest or has to solve something; wants to succeed; can be any gender.

The Villain: Struggles against the protagonist; seen as morally bad; attempts to stop hero from achieving goal.

The Donor: Gives the hero something special (power/weapon/wisdom etc.); enables hero to complete quest.

1) The movie targets a family audience.

2) That could be split up into the following 3 groups.

.Young kids whom play with lego

.Parents who played with it when they were young too

.Young adult cinema-goers

Explain HOW the movie appeals to each part of the target audience:

1) The young kids play with lego and bright colours also appeals to them.

2) Parents whom played with lego when they were young would enjoy the movie because the movie has some references that may appeal to them, such as the 80's space man, batman etc...

3) Young adult cinema goers (teenagers), this may attract their attention because of the cast, like brad pitt and even some of the romance.

4) Both genders- The males would enjoy the action and building side and the girls will enjoy the romance side of this.

The Lego Movie

Tent Pole Production: A film that supports the finance of another company, so it can make enough money to fund smaller films, and cover their own costs.

Merchandise

They brought out 17 lego sets to go with the film, and collectable mini-figures, they also brought out the video game at the same time, a range of school supplies such as rubbers stickers and activity books.

The lego movie also used methods to promote this film:

Such as releasing it a week before the holidays, also each week in January a new character poster was released. And the video game was released 10 days before the movie came out.

Vertical Integration

Often a single parent company will own multiple smaller companies in the film industry.

1. Parent company

2. All profits come back to that company

3. Because as they're promoted by each other its like a chain reaction, they just keep getting more publicity

5. Again, all profits come back to that company

6. A film that supports the finance of another company, so it can make enough money to fund smaller films, and cover their own costs.

7. The company would earn more money and be able to cover everything without having to rely on another company to provide funds.

What are the building blocks for success?

The company didn't just make a movie that appeals to kids, but they also made a movie that appeals to kids as well as the adults/parents willing to pay for maybe a lego set, or a Lego Movie T-Shirt, or even tickets to go and see the movie, because remember, the parents/guardian of the kid is the one who has the key to the wallet, -the one who pays for everything.

What did lego do right?

Lego didn't just make a movie about some lego characters that was a whole load of nonsense which could've still done kind of well and enjoyed by kids, but they were relatively clever with how they produced this and what they did to make this movie good. The company brought Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to create genuinely funny and creative movie.

How has it laid foundations for future success?

It has laid foundations for future success incase they brought out another movie, so that the kids who watched it when the first one came out they might wanna go and see the new one because they remember how in love they were with the first one when they first saw it. And it ends up bringing more success, making the second one just as, or even more successful than the first.

How has it got heart?

A good film makes you feel something, they're trying to say that the Lego Movie makes you feel something, it could be a connection to a character, or laugh or cry etc...

How is it all about "you"?

They say it's about you by asking you a bunch of questions, are you a follower? Are you a builder? Are you part of a team?

How does it show it knows its audience?

It knows its audience, its offers something for everybody, slapstick comedy for the kids, adult humor for adults, everybody gets a little bit of what it's got to offer.

The Lego Movie Marketing campaign was so effective because the company was quite clever with how they did things like, what products they released, how they promoted the movie, and who they aimed certain things at. For example, if a kid is out shopping with his mum, and sees a Lego movie Lego set on the shelf, and asks for it, and the mum says no. But think of it compared to if it was a Lego Movie lunchbox, the mum would look at it and think, ‘My son needs a new lunchbox anyway, and it would make him very happy if I get him this specific lunchbox, it’s a win-win situation, rather than spending £15 on a Lego set that’s just going to get broken then all the pieces will go missing, and it has almost no benefit to her son other than an afternoon of fun till he gets bored of it, so there’s absolutely no point of buying that when she can buy her son a perfectly good lunchbox, that will last him a fairly long time which is only £1.99’.

The company also released the video game 10 days before the movie was released, so that was a little promotion in itself right there. The company would’ve also had some of the actors go on talk shows or have a couple of interviews talking about the movie, and that promoted it.

The Lego Movie was rather successful with how it was promoted and branded and how it targeted specific audiences for different things in the TV advert, how they arranged for the Lego Movie trailer to be played right at the end of one of England's biggest shows, Dancing On Ice, with 6.6 million people watching live. The fact they got all these companies to make their own adverts out of lego then played right next to each other, right before the trailer for the Lego Movie, right before one of Britain's biggest shows, Dancing On Ice with millions watching live, this was quite advertising. Not only that but also the fact that they separately uploaded the entire AD break onto YouTube but this gave the Lego Movie quite a lot of publicity and attention.

The two main characters (protagonists) are smiling at you, and standing right at the front of the cover. In my opinion this is done deliberately so the children can see the difference between the good and the bad. Emmet and Wildstyle are looking at you in such a way as if they're asking you to join them, (because its a game) and gives you an effect that makes you want to play.
